Nursery Nutrition
At Colourbox we provide a healthy, low sugar menu (main meals and snacks), along with drinks, to foster a positive approach to healthy eating. As a nursery school we are very much aware of the importance of providing a positive influence on the children's knowledge, attitudes and behaviour towards food and a healthy lifestyle. The sharing of food and drink plays an important part in the social life of Colourbox Montessori School as well as reinforcing children's understanding of the importance of healthy eating. We are especially proud of the way in which our nutrition practice is integrated into all areas of the nursery school. Staff and children eat together and children are encouraged to use real cutlery and crockery as soon as they are able to do so. Our older children have recently been involved in trialling the British Nutrition Foundation's cookery course for early years.
Our menus also include recipes from other countries and link into the Montessori cultural curriculum. All children here at Colourbox have suitable food made for them - taking into account allergies, family preference and cultural requirements. Water and milk are served throughout the day. Children are involved in the growing, preparation and serving of food to ensure that they feel involved. Our cooks prepare all meals fresh on site daily, using locally sourced produce to ensure freshness and to support the local business community. We recognise the importance of encouraging a daily selection of fruit and vegetables and pro-actively promote the '5-Alive' project. Sugar and salt are also reduced in recipes as much as possible.
Throughout a child's journey with us at Colourbox we strive to develop good eating skills and table manners. The children often cook food for nursery snack, e.g. baking bread; picking blackberries and making jam. In addition to drinks and snacks, each child has their own named water bottle (with a photograph of them) and is encouraged to drink frequently through the day to keep their brains and bodies hydrated. Above everything else we hope that we inspire in our children the importance of a healthy, nutritious well balanced diet.
Lunch consists of two courses and tea is served at 4.30pm each day.
