The sharing of food and drink plays an important part in the social life of Colourbox nurseries. We are especially proud of the way in which our nutrition practice is integrated into all areas of the nurseries, providing a positive influence on the children’s knowledge, attitudes and behaviour towards food and a healthy lifestyle, including oral health.
Our talented cooks prepare all meals fresh on site daily, taking allergies, family preference and cultural requirements into account. We provide a healthy, low sugar and low salt menu (sample below) comprising breakfast, 2 course lunch, tea and snacks, with water and milk throughout the day. We recognise the importance of encouraging a daily selection of fruit and vegetables and we promote the ‘5-Alive’ project and we also refer to the “Voluntary Food and Drink Guidelines for Early Years Settings in England”. Our menus also include recipes from other countries and link into the Montessori cultural curriculum. Our older children have been involved in trialling the British Nutrition Foundation’s cookery course for early years.
In addition to drinks and snacks, each child has their own named water bottle (with a photograph of them) and is encouraged to drink frequently through the day to keep their brains and bodies hydrated.
